Planning your renovation

Getting started

There's a lot to consider when planning your renovation.

Undertaking a renovation or extension is a big project. With lots to do and so many things to organise you'll need expert advice.

It's all in the planning

Use our checklist to help with your planning your renovation. It will help you consider what you want from your project and what you can afford.

Architect or designer?

Decide whether you need an architect, designer or a draughtperson to work on the project and prepare the plans. We have some advice if you're not sure who you need.

Staying put or moving out?

Consider whether you can realistically live in the house while the work is being done. If you are planning major work, such as adding another storey, it's advisable to move out while work is underway. If you're going to stay on site, see our tips for living through a renovation.

Expert project management is key

Decide who is going to manage the work. Management of a major renovation project is similar to managing a new house project – someone needs to be in charge. This person is responsible for making sure each of the tradespeople are on site when needed, the quality of the work is checked, variations are handled in a consistent way and progress payments are made.

You can save time and take the hassle out of your renovation by leaving JDC Builders to project manage it. Imagine the ease of having just one point of contact - we’ll liaise with designers, council, engineers and tradespeople on your behalf.
